Our early Spring flowers have now gone - this faded fritillary was among the last. I owe the title to a comment by a New Zealand cousin of mine ( a keen critic of my photos ! ) that the image brought to mind their Memorial Day. I then thought of General MacArthur's remark about old soldiers.

Nice composition, Ian. And well chosen title. I like how the stem fades away into the grass. I'm not so sure about the flower in the BG, which pulls my eyes away from the FG flower. But that is just my thought. Fine image as is.

I really like the selective focus Ian. I might be tempted to get rid of the rear OOF bloom as (to me) it is somewhat distracting.

Ian: Really interesting POV and comp and I like the light on the main subject especially. I would be sorely tempted to clone the OOF BG flower or crop this to a vertical. However I do prefer how you've set up this horizontal comp so cloning would be my preference. Well seen and captured.>=))>

Very nice dof and I like the fade away quality you refer to, Ian. I do think I prefer the version without the bg flower, but I also think the bg flower would have worked if it had been lower in the frame than the main subject. I'm not sure what makes me think that, but that's how it feels to me. Neat fritillary, by the way-ours are much plainer.

Another vote for the repost, Ian. Very nice. I think simpler is better in this case.

Ian: I do like the repost much better. Interesting comment by Dennis about teh position of the OOF flower. With it close to the top edge the eye tends to go from the main subject to the BG flower and then out of the frame. If it was lower I think the eye would tend to stay in the frame and work better. Just my theory. >=))>

Dennis/ Bill : that was a good comment by Dennis on the position of the oof flower. Trouble is I don't think I could have got the perspective on the main flower that I wanted without leaving the distant one pretty high. Don't know for sure - will certainly keep the point in mind for future shots of this kind.
