Verena's Gorge

Last week we had for three consecutive days rainy weather.....and the rivers and lakes had flood level in our area. This photo was taken the last morning of these three days at Verena gorge near Solothurn/Switzerland. I've had a hard time processing this one to get the look I was after and I'm not quiet sure if this is the final version. someting is disturbing me....i'm not sure what it is. I thnk there is something missing. Does it look too flat? I used three three exposures....one for the lights, one for the darks and the third one was to get some structure and details in the water.
I reeally would like your opinion for this one since i'm really not queit sure what I shoud think about this one.

Bill,

My first impression was HDR when I first looked at it. The whole image has a muddy haze over it. It's pretty grainy in some areas too. I would expect to see more details in the rocks and trees, but it isn't there. Seems like the white balance is too warm.

It's well composed, but the details just aren't there and the color is off. Perhaps start from scratch with the processing.I hope you figure it out. It's a nice scene.

Hi Bill. My fist impression is that this could be done in one shot maybe. It also seems too brown/warm lacking some contrast. I think the composition/image is really good and worth going back to, to get right. I wish I had the time right now (but because of the workshop season, I don't until late summer early fall) but I'd give you a short freebie on Skype to help you. If you want to you could send me one raw image and I could tweak it in raw for you with the settings, just to see what it could handle?

Otherwise, love the potential here.

I like the subject, comp, and shutter speed for the water, but it does look very grainy (look you applied a PS filter), and the tone/color of the image looks a bit off to me, Bill.

This is quite beautiful. The mistiness is striking. There is so much green that it almost seems to have a green cast, though the white water isn't, so that's not it.

Bill,

This sure looks like a beautiful scene and certainly well composed. But I think as you say, something isn't right. It's as if the shadow values have been raised, and indeed the contrast is very flat. It's like someone took the output sliders at each end of the curve/levels, compressing the curve and sucking all the contrast out of it. The upper 1/3 and most of the upper trees looks ok, but the shoreline area and most the water look pretty far off.

With 3 different exposures you may be able to work with just one of two to get a better processed image, but I would agree, this needs to be worked a little differently. Maybe you could post a couple of your original, unprocessed files?

Bill, this is surely not lacking for composition, it's wonderful. I do see your point however on overall flatness. At first glance it almost looks like it was raining or some kind of mist across the entire scene. What I might try before fighting contrast, and it looks like it needs that as mentioned, would be to do a global cast removal just to see if it's pegged out with overwhelming greens / yellow cast. Then proceed with normal contrast, saturation, etc.
Just an idea.

I liked this right away from the thumbnail. I think it's a great scene, and composition. It's just that global hazy look that is the issue. Maybe a manual blend would work better???? I think it's worth trying to sort out though, for sure!

First I would like to thank you all for your thoughts and feedbacks on this one. Sorry that I didn't respond earlier but I was off for one day. I always apreciate the honest feedbacks I get here on NPN. Your feedbacks confirmed my impression that I need to work this over.....I think I'll start from scratch with the processing. I also agree that I might process this one with only one or two RAW files. But I also think that probably need to go back there again and shoot it again since I think the conditions weren't really perfect. We had really a lot of rain andthe water in that creek turned brownish........

@Mark: Thanks for our offer. I will write you an e-mail!
@Scott: No there was no photoshop filter applied here.
@Lon: If I start from scratch again I'll also post some of the original raw files.
@Paul: I agree with you with the yellow/green cast. I will this work once again a little bit diferently
@Chris: This is a manual blend.....but as some others mentioned I think it works better with just one or two RAW files blended together.

@all, I really aprreciate and would like to thank each one of you for your thoughts on this one. It was a big help hearing your thoughts. Thanks

Not quite sure what went wrong with the processing, but I sure am enjoying the comp, Bill. It does look a little flat as you mentioned, but also a little grainy. Good luck with the reshoot as this looks like a fantastic place and well worth the effort.

Bill, This is a wonderful scene with a great mood. The light looks like it was really nice to me, so I hope you can get the processing worked out. Looks like the scene will be well worth the effort!
