Another sunset scene from the Kona side of Hawaii. Found this little cove just up the shore from Muana Lani. Loved the small natural bridge and the over hanging palms. The sun was setting in the perfect spot. Whitney and I had dinner reservations shortly after sunset at a restaurant I could walk to from here. I set up the camera on the rocks and right next to it was a little pocket that I was actually able to sit and recline in facing the view with my cameras LCD right in my face. I sat there perfectly relaxed watching the sunset, clicking away. Most relaxing sunset shot I've ever taken. Usually I'm in full panic mode trying to get everything! Finished up and went to the best dinner I had on the whole island with my beautiful wife. It was a perfect evening.

Wondering what your thoughts are on this. For some reason, it feels like something is lacking here. Not sure what. Is it just not that interesting of a photo? Weird composition? Too much saturation in the sky? Thanks for your C&C!

I like this. The composition is strong and the degree of brightness with the sun and reflection feels just right.

Yes, there is something lacking… I wasn’t there.

You have been knocking them out of the park since your first post.

This is one of the best island shots I can remember. Wonderful processing and I love that I can’t see any sun flare. To some, the sky may seem slightly over saturated in the upper corners, but opinions will vary. I really like that that top edges of the sky are not darkened like so many other blended shots.

Another homerun.

Another fantastic image here. A very simple composition and great light. I wouldn't say it is a "wow" image, but the subtleness (even with the great light) here is very relaxing and I enjoy that.

Gorgeous shot Ted. The composition is beautifully ballanced.....maybe just a little more room at the top? Envious well done :toast:

Really like this. I don't feel this is a weird composition. There isn't ONE eye grabber in the foreground like most 'perfect' landscape shots have, but I like this how it is. It almost makes me feel like I am there watching the sunset. It's more natural...

I do think the sky could be toned down a tad as far as saturation goes. Just a tad. And (if you'll allow me to be REALLY picky), I noticed some interesting hints of exposure blending around the long palm tree trunks. Some spots show the shadow detail, while the rest is mostly shadow. Nothing big at all, just thought I'd mention it.

IMO, the processing is outstanding. Looks like a fantastic location, and I'm glad the whole evening was fantastic!

Nathan, thank you, you are absolutely right about the trees. I didn't notice that! Gonna fix. thanks for pointing that out. I think I will bring down the saturation a bit also. Thanks for your comments!

Ted,

I'm really enjoying the sky and the palms swaying in the ocean breeze. I think though that you're on to something by indicating that something is lacking here. Actually, maybe there's too much? The bottom 20% or so of the frame doesn't really seem to be adding to the beautiful sunset scene and there is much detail-less darkness throughout the bottom area. I think a crop would help simplify this and keep the eye on the sunset, palms and clouds.

Saturation? Well, maybe a little bit. If anything I think you could back off the magenta. Also, just a guess that there's a little Orton going on with this one too? Not too heavy, but I think it's affecting the palm trees more than anything else - but definitely a dreamy feel to this one.

A couple of tweaks and I think you could make this one a keeper.

Gorgeous color here Ted. I agree with Lon that the Orton effect may be a little heavy but this scene is to die for. I'm jealous.....

Ted,

My first thoughts were the halos around the palm trunks needs to be fixed. The magenta is a little to much, but just a little. Lon is very magenta sensitive and he is right this time. The FG is okay, but its not what I think is wrong with it. Overall it is composed well., but what I think is that it is not conveying the emotive state you were in when you were there, at least not to me. NOt sure what it needs to do that. Its a fine photo however.

I like the comp and the light but feel like there is a bit of flare or something washing out the contrast in the clouds above and water below the sun, a bit of a selective burning might do the trick, I see some odd halo's around the palms, I like the color saturation as it is, afterall it is paradise.

I like this picture, not the usual beach photo. But I do agree with Lon's comments.

Ok, here's an updated image. Thanks for all the feedback. Fixed the exposure blending mistake, reduced the saturation of the sky, worked on the halos a bit, and took down the orton a touch.

Saw in one of your posts, Kauai was next. I live Kauai and would love to shoot with you if you make it to the island. I'm just learning photography but I could show you some great spots as I have lived here 32 years. Look me up if you are so inclined. By the way... love your work. Amazing.
