Wildflower ID...Orchid?

Found this guy while bushwacking along Buck Creek earlier today. Looks like an Orchid or maybe a Lily....just don't know. It stands about 4 inches high and getting any kind of decent composition was tough since it was about a foot from a steep ledge with deep, fast current below. Nothing artistic here, just a cool and unusual flower. Included two versions, both 720px though. Thanks for looking.

I like the BG in the main shot, but the second (the one on the larger photo link) appeals to me most. I like seeing the details in the bloom better there.

Bruce:

Can't help with the ID but sure like the look of this flower. The second (larger) version has a better perspective.

Great find, Bruce. It is a Calypso orchid..

Like Nathan and Gary, I especially like the second capture.

Thanks you guys and David I knew you'd come through with an ID  You're as reliable as the rain here in the PNW :toast:

Hi Bruce: The common name of the local variety is Fairyslipper. Calypso bulbosa. Nice shot.

What a find! I didn't look it up or anything, but it sure has the exotic look of an orchid. So much the better that it is wild! The larger version is a gorgeous image, Bruce.

P.S. Thanks to Dennis and David for the ID. I was thinking Lady Slipper, but not sure; Fairy Slipper sounds more PNW anyway.

Bruce: Really interesting how a change in POV on the same subject produces completely different images. I actually like the original for its artistic features but the larger version is more descriptive and quite good on its own. Nice find and a fine capture. >=))>

Nice find, well photographed. I like the original post as a more artistic view (although you could get much closer, to really show off the flower) while the "larger view" does a better job of putting the flower in its habitat.
