Rufous Hummingbird

Not too much action in this one. We had a sudden burst in our hummingbird population a couple of days ago-not sure what's going on, but it's pleasant. We've probably tripled the amount of nectar we're putting out and added three feeders to the two we had. A couple of the newcomers are males and one of them decided the feeder nearest the kitchen window was his territory. I couldn't resist opening the window and getting some shots. Unfortunately, I didn't get anything decent of him in flight-he was darting every which way chasing the others and I wasn't quick enough.

1Div, 500mm f4 ISL + 1.4TC, Black Widow on RRS legs, f11, 1/500, Av mode with no compensation, iso 400. Cropped to 5.1 MP and processed in CS6. Taken under cloudy skies/rain/filtered sun at 3:35 pm on May 24th.

Your comments and criticisms are always appreciated.

Thanks for looking,

I like this one, Dennis. The blurred foot shows the action while the rest of the bird looks sharp. The backlighting works well but maybe a little too much contrast between the shadows and highlights. You might lighten those shadows a bit. :toast:

Always nice to see photos of this species, their color is outstanding and you got some of the iridescence as well. You are likely at a reasonable limit for cropping but I think I would like to see him a little larger in the frame to best appreciate detail. I see a few bunnies in the upper part of the background and an unusual something of lighter tone in the upper right. We are just going into the monsoon season here which always makes shooting a challenge.

Love the detail Dennis and like the scratching pose. Other than the dust bunnies, I like it as posted.

So sweet are these birds when still. You caught a posture I've never seen before and I like the exposure a lot.

Dennis,
Perhaps it is my monitor, but the image seems a little dark. This is an interesting pose.
