Got up at 2:30am to photograph these rocks at South Coyote Buttes. It was a cloudy and very windy night. A long exposure gave the cloud a sense of movement.

John, I think you'll get a fair number of people who are confused by the stars and streaks in what otherwise looks like a mid-day light level on the rocks, so I'd probably tone it down a tad. However, too much dark and you'd loose the impact of these really impressive formations which so many miss in a rush to see the Wave or WP nearby. The clouds and movement are absolutely outstanding, and really well captured here. Reminds me of an old tree and streaks I shot in the same place at 2:30am years ago. If you do choose to keep it this bright I might bring up the shadows in the darker bushes just a tad.

I love the details, textures, and shapes in the rock. I think the long exposure effect on the clouds really balance the composition well.

Really neat, John, Beautiful rock and your sky and clouds are superb. Agree with Marc about reducing the brightness of the rock. Assume this was moonlight from the nearly full moon we have now. A repost would be fun to see. I also would be interested in the tech info on this image.

Thanks, Marc, for your suggestions. I went back to darken the foreground a bit. Here is the new version. Looks a little more like at night?

That was a surprise! Based on the thumbnail I expected a day picture (should have looked at the title...), but it's not. A very cool shot, and I agree with the others here about the foreground. The repost is a major improvement and looks a lot more balanced in my opinion!

To me this is a really remarkable photograph. I love how the motion of the clouds seems to make it look like the earth is moving forward at warp speed.

The clouds really complement the compsition of this shot. I like the surrealism of the day time look, but I would experiment with darkening the mid-tones further while keeping the highlights shimmering. Maybe then it will look closer to night - which might be a bit more effective.

The rock formation is so pretty. The sky is a technical masterpiece. Honestly, I can't decide if I like them together or not. This is especially so in the image first posted. The repost is much better.
