WC#584 The Rule of Turds

I just want to begin by stating I mean no disrespect. But it hasn't rained here all week, and so I started looking through my archives, and that can always be dangerous.

I found this picture I took July 22, 2009, for an Intro to Digital Photography course I enrolled in at Waubonsee Community College when getting back into photography after a long absence. The assignment was the composition elements of "Rule of Thirds" and "Depth of Field".

We had an old dog, Buster, who had bad arthritis and couldn't walk from our deck down into the yard to do his business, and it had just rained that afternoon, which is clearly consistent with this weekly theme, and I'd had a couple of pops so I took this picture. Please see the larger version.

All comments and critique welcome, especially as to whether you think I managed to embody the two assignment topics well, and also how about my frame? I debated how to set the hue and value.

Pentax K100D Super (6MP), Pentax 50mm1.4 at f/4.0, ISO 800, 1/500s, hand held SR.

Think you nailed both assignments John, and happy to see you left more space to the left for any possible movement in that direction. It's nature!

Thanks Jim (to kill two birds with a single stone). Good to see I haven't been stoned, but I was hoping that Carolyn Derstein would weigh in.

I live with three Newfoundlands and a Bernese Mountain dog and dung is something of a common feature of our backyard. This one is a stunning specimen  . You have followed the rule of dung composition perfectly in that always leave room for the animal that placed it there................Jim

Oh John, you are such a character. . . you and your sense of humor sure add some fun quirkiness to this gallery! Your entry is pretty gross but I guess you won't get stoned. . . yet. So thoughtful of you to include the larger version for better critiquing. I think this could stand a slight crap, oops I mean crop, up from the bottom. Also, I wish your "specimen" was more clearly in focus (wait. . .no I don't).

John, if you take the center slider and move it to the left just between the slats, the subject will be far more appealing and of course refer to the histogram so you don't soil yourself in the process..

Thanks for the suggestion, Charlie. I tried it and I think it improves the overall image. Thanks, man!

And thanks to all for your suggestions and comments.

John - thank you for posting. I had always been somewhat confused over the rule of turds.... now I know it simply means using processing tools properly can remove all kinds of poop from an image

What I have learned: Proper prior post-processing prevents posting poopie photographs.
