Into the Distant

After sunrise from white pocket, we decided to head to a location closer to Flagstaff for any possible sunset. With the way the clouds were looking, we figured this was the best choice. After arriving at this spectacular canyon that seemed to be seldom visited (from the point we accessed by) we headed to the rim to explore the vantage points. Within a matter of minutes the sun broke through the clouds allowing for about 20 minutes of amazing light just in the canyon. The dark skies in the distant made a nice contrast and eventually the clouds closed up for good leaving us without a sunset. This was a perfect case of being at the right place at the right time. I couldn't imagine what we would have done if we left any later. As always, comments and critiques appreciated.

This is a real beauty, I love how the light is diffused by the haze down in the valley, and the details are gorgeous.

Very nice Peter. You did get some amazing light. It would be nice to see a larger version!

Beautiful colors, especially in the distance, set of well by the stormy skies.

Nice shot and the green in the canyon bottom really makes this for me. I find the geology at this location very interesting as well. Looks like the classic canyon within a canyon. It appears that the softer sedimentary rocks weathered away leaving a broad valley. Subsequent erosion has then "eaten" into the underlying basement rock (with I assume is older pre-Cambrian crystalline rock), carving out a second canyon. The whole sequence appears be capped by much younger volcanic rocks exposed on the upper left. As much as I like this, I think less foreground and more background would work too, as I find the main canyon to be the most interesting part of the image. Nicely done.

I think this is superb as is Peter, well captured and processed! It was a truly amazing experience wasn't it? Glad we had a chance to photograph it together.

Later,

Thanks everyone, I am hoping to return back to this canyon under some more favorable skies, but I am pretty happy with the images I got here. There are some compositions here that I would like to work on to get more if the canyon floor in there, but it will be hard to get there with light like this again.

The eye-catcher for me is the contrast of the distant wall against the darkened sky.
Good dof; contrast and texture.

Great light on the canyon and I would focus even more on that by cropping out at least 1/3 and probably as much as 2/3 of the sky. I've been to Flagstaff many times - what canyon is this?
