Double, double toil and trouble!

A tumultuous Hawaiian sea is rocked with explosions as cool water comes in contact with 1300-2000 degree molten lava. I shot this from a boat about 20 feet away and could feel the intense heat on my face. It was incredible.

Wow! This is one hell of an image (pun intended), well titled.

Kory, the dark processing is perfect here. I was slightly conflicted on that approach with the other one of yours I saw from here, but not this time. The darkness isolates this very powerful subject perfectly, like some kind of demonic serpent rising from the misty waters. This is an outstanding shot. The subject feels unusually animated in this rendition and that's why it works. The absence of visible land separates the best parts of this image and it is full of power. One of the best I can remember seeing from the lava.

Wow, incredible sight. I guess the boat tour is the way to go. Abstract yet I know exactly what I'm looking at. Crazy :toast:

Such a brooding mood here and I love it. The fine details of the splashing lava bring this all together. I would love to photograph the lava flows in Hawaii, definitely on my list in the next few years. Looking forward to more from here.

Kory,

This really captures the violent nature of volcanic eruptions. The water action is what makes this work so well in my opinion.

This image is absolutely insane. :toast: :toast: :toast:

I agree with Mrc, the darker processing makes it. And that head in the smoke on top of the "body", looking back off to the left, yikes. Does everybody see it? Wild! One of the best images in 2013 IMO.
