Sharp-tailed Grouse

Canon 1D-X, 300mm x 2.0TC, braced in truck window
f8, 1/500, ISO1000

We found a Sharp-tailed Grouse lek; well, at least a male dancing for a pair of females. After giggling uncontrollably for a few minutes, I was able to get some photos. It was early morning, with heavy overcast. The choice was depth of field or motion blur. The feet dance/drum very fast. This is the compromise result.

Full frame. Very slight sharpening.

C & C, please. Thanks for looking.

Turned out well. Nice detail in this action shot. I like how you caught the grouse lifting his right leg-adds to the sense of the action.

I like this a lot, Jim. I almost feel like the grouse is dancing for me (scary...).

Gorgeous, Jim. I notice you decided to go with Canon finally. How are you liking your new equipment? I like your compromise. The motion blur in the right leg conveys the dance effect quite nicely. Very well done.

That's a terrific shot Jim. The overcast conditions seem to have assisted with achieving a good even exposure. I love the way you've managed to capture the bird looking at the camera and in mid dance. :toast:

Fine image of the action, Jim. These dances always remind me of some Native American war dance.

The large version is a must see. Awesome detail for such low light. The lifted foot and open beak add to the attractiveness of the action you captured.

Sweet One Jim!!!
