Bull Elk Bugling

Ran into this guy in the northeastern wooded part of The Great Smoky Mountain National Park last fall. Her had several females with hm he was escorting. I did not even realize elk were reintroduced into that park, but have since heard they can be seen in some of the meadows occasionally as well. I cropped about 20% off the picture. Comments welcome.

Interesting photo Walt, beginning with the nice bull elk. You caught an excellent buggling pose, uninterrupted by anything in front. For me however, I find the saturation levels "way" overdone. I suspect that this fall scene was rather colorful in reality, but the green grass and fallen dried leaves colors seem hyped. Having that vertical hillside in the background is pretty cool. It appears you were very close to this elk in rut, I would be concerned for my safety at 78 mm - unless you were in a vehicle, in which case I would be concerned about my paint job. Congratulations in finding this handsome elk and sharing the photo.

Thanks Gary. I am wondering if my monitor calibration is off because I have gotten comments on over saturation on my last post as well. I'll try to check that out. Yes, we were in a vehicle off on one of the gravel back roads in our jeep. I was a little nervous, but my wife was behind the wheel and ready to take off if he began to get jittery. Interesting though was that he never seemed to even notice us as we kept very still while he and he mates walked through. They crossed the road right in front of the car so we had to stop anyway. It was a great deal of fun getting to shoot as much as I could of the group.

OK, I went back to the original process but there was no saturation added, but I did turn the chroma back a bit. Are the colors here better?

I don't see much difference. Maybe it's the light.

Hey Walt. I do not see any difference in the repost. Internet prefers sRGB colorspace, but I believe the other colors spaces available tend to have even LESS pop when displayed on the net. My gut feeling is that it isn't a monitor issue either though, which leaves the issue of Web Browsers and how they display color. I know little about the world of internet browsers.

Walt,

On first look this dopes look a little over saturated, but it is much less noticeable on the larger version. Personally I quite like "rich" colours where appropriate and this seems to be the case here. The pose is wonderful
Converting to web always throws colours off in my opinion, and you really need to use an Internet browser that manages colour properly so this makes IE a no no. I use Firefox which not only manages colours but is free, with apparently no spying included?
