Receding Wave

by Thomas Haney

Gallery: LandscapePosted April 16, 2013467 views18 comments
A massive wave recedes back to the ocean after crashing against sandstone cliffs at Cape Kiwanda on the Oregon coast. To get the image, I was standing on the edge of a cliff about 15 feet about the water as the huge waves slammed into the rocks and high winds buffeted me and made it difficult to keep my balance. It was an exhilarating and somewhat terrifying experience. The scene is about 70 feet wide.

A stunning abstract with great dynamic balance for me, Thomas. The lacking sense of scale adds a lot in my opinion.

Wow like this Thomas it is so abstract that I have trouble visualising what is going on but that just makes it even more intriguing. I like it.

Bravo, the image and story are both incredible. It looks like an abstract shot of fire. The timing is excellent and the colours are stunning.

Fantastic Thomas!!! You're best to date, IMHO. Not only a wonderful abstract of nature, I think your shutter speed is perfect. The whispy, ghost-like texture of the receeding wave is just awesome. There's also a great balance and mix of the sandstone shore and darker rock(whatever that is..) Just fabulous all the way around. No nits or suggestions.

Wonderful abstract Thomas. I never would have guessed what it was. Like the motion and colors and how you arranged it. Beauty.

Very cool and abstract image. Initially I thought it was a milkweed plant going to seed. Not sure if you can pull back some of the hot spots in the waves - could be my monitor. Smoke on the water, love it.

Takes a minute to get your bearings here! Great idea to flip the photo; it really looks smokey.

Brilliant! What a fantastic idea, and perfect execution. Reminds me of aerial images, but the texture of the water is just enough to make a close observer realize what this is. Really fantastic work.
