Spring beauty

by Carolyn Derstine

Gallery: FloraPosted April 12, 2013134 views12 comments
These flowers are popping up in the wild and in my flowerbeds right now. I think they are called Spring Beauties. . .let me know if that is not correct. Some have more pink lines in the petals but this one was mostly white.

Canon Rebel T1i. 180mm macro lens. F/13 for 1/40 sec. ISO 400. Tripod mounted, natural lighting, spot metered. Background darkened in editing.

Nice comp and DOF. Good detail! Removing the blue color cast in the shadow would be a help.

Definitely Spring Beauty (Claytonia virginica). I like how you've caught the sparkles in the petals and the details in the stamen. If you look around a bit, you should be able to find some with a lot more pink in the petals (especially the veins). There does seem to be a blue color cast.

Nice, Carolyn. I like the oof blossom in the bg and the exposure and detail in the main subject are excellent.

Beautiful flower! Nice detail, BG, and I like the frame. :-)
Not sure about the small OOF half-flower.. but I think Phil's suggestion of removing the blue cast would help.

Really like the light across the flower, and the shadows that add a 3D effect.
I especially like the pink anthers, and that hint of pink along the glistening petals as well..
Beautiful comp, beautiful little flower! :toast: :toast:

Very nice image Carolyn. It looks as though the flower is covered in sugar. I like the BG, shadows and the overall image except for the slight blue cast. Other than that, well done.

The light gives this a sparkly look. Love the little dashes of pink. On the comp, I'd rather see just the one bloom, but the suggestion of a twin underneath isn't bad...; perhaps better in softer light?

Carolin, this is one of the best delicate, graceful, elegant, clean and simple photo that I have seen. I am enthusiastic, as you see.
