I spent three weeks in the Tambopata National Preserve in Peru one winter, and spent most of every day out in the forest looking for subjects. Once I found this hummingbird nest just 6 feet off the ground hanging from a palm frond, I knew I'd be spending some time there. The mother came and went fairly often and I was getting some good shots, but I was hoping for better. At one point a strong wind buffeted the rainforest canopy, a warning of an oncoming thunderstorm, but I stuck around waiting for her to return because the light was suddenly perfect, soft and rich. I had to use a high ISO to freeze the motion of her wings, but otherwise I'm really happy with it. Hard, baseball sized fruit began falling from the canopy 100 feet over my head and slamming into the ground with enough force to leave little craters, so I threw my gear together and ran out of the forest.

having spent quite some time in the rainforest I know that good light is a very tricky business down there but here its spot on! I also love the motion blur of the palm leafs in the background. I would prefer having some more space bellow and to the left but I suppose you did the best of the situation. Wonderful little hermit, wonderful capture! :toast:

Some nice light and an image that speaks well of the rain forests. It would be nice to have a larger version to critique. You can upload an optional 1200 pixel version when you post. At this size, the hummer doesn't look quite sharp. There is also quite a bit of noise appearing in the background that could easily be solved with selective noise reduction. Still a fine image for the environment.

Yeah I agree about the noise. I had just switched to digital and was going nuts with high ISO's. What would you do about the noise?

There are many excellent noise reduction software solutions. I use Nik Dfine2. I would run noise reduction then mask off the bird so that it doesn't have the effect applied as it will soften any feather detail even further.
