I have been lurking for several weeks and was impressed enough to join. Sorry for the easy shot at a common bird but I wanted to use this image to gather suggestions on what I can do to improve.

Sony a99
Sony G 70-400mm
Focal length 400
f/8
1/1000
ISO 200

Welcome aboard Joel.
Nothing wrong with common birds. We can only photograph what we can see.
I like the way you've caught the splash of water but I feel it would be better if we could see a bit more of the bird itself.

Hey,joel Im a rookie too,and it took me a couple of months. It takes alot to throw it all out there, So being a rookie my only advice to you is to visit parks were ducks and geese are used to people and then try and pick up on there personality and habits to perdict moves they will be close and you will be relaxed, youll find you can get very nice shots without having to crop.

Hi Joel: Welcome to NPN. Glad you decided to join and post. It is a great way to get honest feedback and improve your photography. This looks like you caught a nice moment for the goose and water. It would be helpful to post at the sizes allowed. You can post at 720 pixels on the long edge for the first image, and a 1200px image for the larger version. It is always helpful to be able to see all of the details possible to allow a more insightful critique.

Welcome Joel, I like the action and this looks like an excellent image but hard to judge at this small size. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work. :toast:
