Pinhole Lion

Hi all, I normally do not post in this gallery, probably since I hardly do any excessive ‘photoshopping’ to my images, and in fact even this image has very little of that. All I did was a black & white conversion with Nik SilverEfex using the ‘pinhole camera’ preset. I altered that slightly by lightening the right side of the face, which turned out very dark due to the pinhole effect, and reduced the brightness in the centre a little. Normally I do not use this preset at all, since it looks quite 'unrealistic', but I felt it worked here. The colour version of this is posted in the Wildlife Gallery.

Southern Kalahari, Botswana
Camera Model Canon EOS-1DX
Shutter Speed 1/160 Sec.
Aperture Value f/5.6
ISO Speed 400
Lens EF500mm f/4L IS USM + 1.4x TC
FF

The b&w version here is very nice, but I'll take the warm backlit glow of the color version every time. What the "pinhole camera" effect did on the left of the lion is really interesting. It makes it look like glowing dust in this version and that's a nice addition here.

I think this works beautifully. It makes it so simple and stark, and puts the emphasis on the lion's head and eyes. Well done. I'll go check out the color version now.

Very natural effect, the BW is much more dramatic than the color IMO. Fantastic portrait.
