NOTE: Funny what you see on NPN. JUST noticed the twig sticking out behind its head so tried to clone it out.

On my way out Saturday afternoon, out of the corner of my eye I saw two large birds perched on a tree in my town. At first, I was disappointed to see they were two turkey vultures. But I stopped and took two quick photos anyway.

This is one. I like the perch, the colors and the sky I guess. Your opinions are greatly welcomed. D90, ISO-320, 1/1000th, f-8.0, manual, 380mm on Sigma 150-500mm. A fairly significant crop. Thanks!

You've got the exposure right and as you've noted, this would benefit if the twigs were gone - easy to do with a step to the left and an awareness when shooting of both subject and background/foreground. Also, the patience to work in closer - TVs can be pretty approachable in my experience if you take your time. Sounds like you were in a hurry, but when life presents you with a nice photo op, maybe it's time to slow down and enjoy the moment. You'll nail it next time.

Bingo John, you nailed the analysis perfectly. Actually, there were two of the birds in the tree, and I didn't think much of it. I took two captures with both birds in the images and off I went--in search of "better" subjects. I don't think I even chimped and looked at the LCD. Thus the big crop and only the 380mm to get both birds in the frame. When I got back home, I was indeed sorry I didn't take more time and at least once focus on a single TV. :frown:

I agree with John. I am a bit biased (negative) about this species because we have so many of them around where I live. Closer and a better comp would help this a lot. If there are a lot of these birds around your area I would just go after a better shot.

Nice image of the TV. I also wish you have taken more time. They are just begining to show up around here, great for flight shots. There does seem to be a halo around the TV. Thanks for sharing.
