Bison up-close

Shot in Sept. this bison was about 25ft. away from me when this shot was taken. The green burrs are common in this area and I have to comb the dog quite often at that time of year.

Nikon D7000 with 18-200 mm lens.
Shot at 170 mm F5.6 at 1/160 sec. with -1 exposure compensation.

Hi Don. I think that the strong shapes and textures of the bison head, particularly the eye and horn, really work with this close up approach, good eye! The extreme upper right corner has some blown highlights in the fur that I would try to reduce. Composition is always going to be an individual's choice, but I wonder if you included a little more to the right side of the face and cropped in a little tighter on the bison's left might make it slightly more balanced. I'm going to be "uber" picky now and suggest that although the sharpness is good, I would like to see a little more sharpness, particularly in the tip of the horn area; just feel these closeup shots really need to really show off what the lens can do. Greater dof might be the ticket to get that sharpness in this situation. Maybe even a little more unsharp mask would be all it takes.

Love the detail and structure especially in the horn and the story it tells with the polished tip as compared to the base. Can agree with Gary that to have it sharp the whole way to the tip would have been even better though.

I like the up close and personal approach Don. I agree with Gary, about the wool in the top right.

Good one, Don. There is just enough of the animal to tell the story of who it is. As Gary says, comp is each person's choice, but I'd entertain the idea of cropping an inch off the bottom and leave it at that.

Don ..this is a masterly image. Love the diagonal color separation, and the placement of the horn ..all works very well ..

Cool close-up Don. I really like the detail and highlight in the eye...something rarely seen.
I agree with Gary that a little more sharpness on the horn tip would help this image.
