King Eider

Just returned from arctic Norway and Finland. Had a great time high above the arctic circle. King eiders were swimming in the harbour and took this one from a floating hide. The red colours are the reflection of a red wooden building.

Beautiful! I really like the surprising color cast from the red building.

Wonderful angle and detail, Edwin. Personally, I'm not to fond of the red.

Very nice eider, but I find the unexpected red water overpowers the image.

I'm with Richard and Dennis on this one. The King Eider is a lovely bird, though, and the very fine detail comes out well in the larger image. I think you could desaturate the red and improve this a lot. :toast:

Interesting to see something different but I go back and forth on the red reflecting water since the Eider has such nice colors also. The larger image has some very nice detail and I like the low perspective plus once you get a good look at the Eider's head it really does have such a nice color pattern. Good job in getting this from a floating hide, way to go.

I agree on the red water but what to do?
Interesting bird.

Thanks all. I realize the reds in the water are not to everyone's taste but so now and then I like to do things differently. All comments are highly appreciated though!!

Love the comp and bird's pose. Not too fond of the water color as it detracts from the bird's wonderful colors a bit.

I love seeing the velvety feather texture in the larger version, well done. For some reason the red doesn't seem distracting in the large version, but a little in the small.

A very nice photo of the Eider but I should also try to reduce the saturation a bit.

Well done!

This is sure a stunning species, love its colors and patterns. I also find the water color overpowering. If you had said there was a maple tree reflecting the red into the water I might feel a bit different about it honestly. Cool photo regardless.
