Frosty Morning

Perhaps my favorite photograph from our recent winter visit to Yellowstone. We found a small group of cow elk foraging near this bunch of frosty tree's, just before the morning sun broke through the clouds.

Canon MkIV, 100-400mm @350mm, f13, 1/40, ISO 100, manual spot meter, mirror lifted and used cable shutter release, cropped approx. 20% all around.

All your comments and suggestions are very much appreciated

Hi Ken. Those trees look like real survivors in a tough environment. The photo would be complete as a landscape, the addition of the elk is a huge bonus. I like the composition as is, but that one lower bough is touching the edge of the frame, small nit. I have never been to Yellowstone (yet), there I admitted it.. So many wonderful wildlife and landscape image from there!!!

Awesome "animal-scape", Ken! I really like it! Your placement of the elk is just great! I like the little splashes of colour around the tree. All in all a really good image. :wavey:

I can understand why this is a favorite of yours Ken; this is really appealing. I like the good isolation of the few trees and the single elk. Also the sense of scale is a strong characteristic of this image. I would not change a thing except maybe crop a bit off the bottom for composition. :toast:

Hey Ken, when I first looked at this my immediate thought was that someone had swiped an image from my blog http://thephotoguyca.fatcow.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/YPN-9297.jpg but then I remembered I wasn't the only one shooting this scene.

This too was one of my favourite scenes and you've captured it well, I especially love the detail in the larger image.

cheers

I'm with Bill. The trees alone have a lot of character, and for me they make the image. Looking forward to seeing more from the trip.

Very nice Ken. This really shows the solitude and harsh environment these animals live in during the winter months.
Well composed! :toast:

One has to see the LP to really appreciate this landscape/wildlife shot Ken.
I like how the browns of the dry grass accent, and the snow that clings up the sides to the tree trucks..
I especially like the aesthetic value here, very nice! :wavey:

Hi Ken! It's all been said already but my two cents is as much as I love wildlife, I think it would be a stronger image without the elk. Did I REALLY say that? Those trees, the vertical framing, the splashes of color, the simplicity...all wonderful! But since the elk is there, it's still a pretty cool image to be proud of.

The almost B&W image draws immediate attention to the elk, and the muted colors of the foliage add an excellent bit of punch. I really like this photo.
