Mating lions in late morning (backlit).

I haven't processed any wildlife image to black and white before, so I thought I would give it a try. I'll post a color version from the same sequence as well for comparison. Please let me know your preference.

Any comments or critiques is greatly appreciated.

I think the black and white version works really well. There's some nice backlighting and you got some good contrast in the tones without losing any detail.

Thumbs up for the B&W. No nits. The two versions are not the same image, but we can see different effect anyway.

Very nice shot. I much prefer the B&W hands down. Seems to show the contrast much better. You caught her looking directly at the male - nice capture!

Impressive photo, love the tight vertical presentation so suited to the subjects interaction. Both color and B+W work for me, but might give a slight edge to the B+W. The bit of separation between the male and female in that B+W makes a positive difference in my opinion as well.

 This came out really cool Johan! I like both really. The B&W is more powerful and artistic, but in the color version I love how the tawny colors come out. I remember I shot this with a much shorter FL and the images do not have the same impact then; this shows that going in tight really helps to achieve a high-impact portrait. :toast:

Thanks for all your nice comments.

@Gary: I started out with the B&W image due to that I preferred the separation of the heads. I am glad you commented on that as I was wondering if others felt the same.

@Vincent: Yes, fullframe in combination with 400 mm makes quite a difference here. So the answer to when you would miss the Mk4 crop factor is: When someone is borrowing your 500
