Hand held with a 500mm f4 II. Comments and critiques welcome. I was standing on a bridge when this guy flew by almost level with me. I like the perspective.

I like wings down and head separate from the wings -- thinking the f4 hurt you a bit here -- the shallow depth of field keeps the bird from being sharp throughout

Nice capture and fun experience for sure! I agree with Scott on the f4 but maybe you can do a bit more processing on it. Sharpen and contrast might help it some more.

I'm in agreement with the previous posts. Just not quite enough DOF, the front wing looks great but focus suffers a wee bit as you move back to the head and back wing. Did you have to crop this much? If so you might reduce that a bit to see if if might provide a little sharper look to the head. The back wing is what it is and not much you can do and to me doesn't detract from the image.

Unfortunately the focus is on the near wing and not on the head. This is something that cannot be corrected in post processing.

Otherwise it is an interesting image with that position and grungy look.

I agree on the DOF; worth working with to see if you can't bring out sharper detail, although I agree with Richard. A focus on the head would have at least split the difference.

Good capture Jerry. I agree the AF point on your 7D picked up the closest point which was the outer wing and at f4 there was not enough DOF to get the head sharp. What af points do you use when shooting BIF? Thanks for sharing.

Bill,

I use the center point. I am still learning, as shooting eagles in flight for the first time with the 500 was a learning experience.

Nice perspective, Jerry, but it looks like the autofocus caught the wing instead of the head, which is rather soft to my eye.
