Deer on the Rocks

These mule deer were soaking up the spring sun in Paradise Valley, MT and doing a good job of pretending to be rocks when I took this shot from the car using the window as a brace. I think it's amazing that a 150 - 200 lb animal can come so close to disappearing when sitting out in the open. (5D, 400mm f5.6, f/8, 1/320s, iso 100)

The upper left deer seems to be saying something. This would be a good one for "you supply the caption", or photo funnies. Somehow you have their undivided attention. The deer bodies blend well with the tawny rocks. It is amazing how well local populations vary in color to reflect their surroundings. Fun image.

Mark, I saw this thumbnail and had to open it because I had no idea what it was. Great camo photo!

despite the harsh light, the deer really do blend in with their environment. I like the image with all of the deer and their varied positions.

Amazing! I only saw two deer until I studied it further. Great example of camouflage in nature and nicely composed!

Those deer certainly do blend in with those rocks. . . in the thumbnail, they look like rocks. I like how they are scattered among the rocks and how they are all watching you! Great capture of these creatures and good entry for the theme.

Great shot Mark. Amazing how they disappear into the BG here. Their bright ears and tawny fur really look like thepatterns and colors of the surrounding rocks. Nice overall composition too.

Nice capture Mark, and perfect for the challenge. I can't believe how well they blend in! You would think the big ears would be a giveaway but they actually look a lot like the sharp shadows in the rocks!
