Too Tight?

I'm ambivalent about this one. It's full frame width, and I like the feel of it, particularly at larger sizes. However, it does seem rather tight at the same time. It all seems to be whether I'm looking at the bird in isolation or as part of the scene.

I'd be interested in your thoughts.

1DIV, 500mm f4 ISL + 1.4TC. Black Widow on RRS legs. f7.1, 1/2500, iso 640, manual exposure. Taken January 20th at the north crane pool on the entrance road to Bosque del Apache NWR. Cropped from top and bottom. Processed in CS5.

Your comments and criticisms are most welcome.

Thanks for looking,

Hi Dennis: While the crane is nice and sharp with great exposure, for me it is too tight in the frame. Of course I also have the opportunity to photograph at the Bosque regularly, so I find this doesn't convey the feeling of the place to me. YMMV

Dennis, great sharpness and DOF. I know it is full frame but I would have created a little more space behind and above the bird in PS which would be easy to do with the uniform blurred BG. Otherwise great shot.

Of course, you could always add canvas all the way around. Clone out the blue area and do a completely brown background to make it easier. The birds sure is sharp. :toast:

The image of the bird is terrific and I love the forward motion of his wings. It would be better to have a little more space around him. I find the blue in the URC distracting and I agree it might be helpful to clone it out to have a consistent brown background. Very nice shot.

Very nice and crisp and excellent IF capture. I agree with the suggestion to clone out the blue and add a bit of canvas all they way around. Beautiful image!

too tight for me, Dennis, but not by a lot. adding a little canvas all the way around would be better for me. I do disagree with Keith about the sense of place--that mountain bg with a crane against it still screams BdA to me.

I do like the pose and brown background but for me it is also just a little tight. I might experiment with the composition by adding some canvas in front and a little in back, do not crop anything from the bottom. See what feels better to you. I have also been trying to pay more attention to the background. A solid brown background would of really put the finishing touch on this.

A bit tight Dennis but doesn't detract from the image, just an amazing look at this crane.

"I'm ambivalent about this one."
Me too
The fine detail is there and it's a neat flight pose with a great POV Dennis.
The only real negatives for me are the blue patch URC, and dark near wing.
Since it's full frame, I have no problem with close framing.. It is what it is.
