Golden Gate Low Tide

by Kathy Barnhart

Even though it has been photographed so many times, the Golden Gate Bridge is so elegant and graceful, and looked particularly so today at low tide.

Canon 5d, M3, ISO100, 28mm, f/11, 1/30 sec, tripod, CP.

Comments and critiques welcome. Thanks in advance.

I actually like this image. The composition is very well balanced, and the color palette of red, green, and blue is pure Kodak. Other than a couple of minor areas, your processing looks good. And it is an image that gives me pleasure to view.

The two minor areas I would address are -
1. The green stuff up front. I think it's a tad too saturated. I would reel the slider back in a bit.
2. The incoming surf. It's on the brink of being washed out (too bright). I'd see if there were any way of bringing out some more detail in the whites, thus toning them down some. Tony Kuyper's luminosity masks or Nik's Viveza w/control points come to mind for undertaking this chore. A second reprocessing of the RAW file, only making it darker, then using the Blend If tool, or manual blending, could also work.

Kathy, A wonderful view of this bridge and I enjoy the comp and feel of the image. Many years since I have crossed that bridge. I think Michael made two excellent suggestions for this as well...

Very nice. I know approximately where you were when you took the shot, but I have never seen the tide this low. The reflection in the tide water works very well. Excellent work! :toast:

A very pleasant composition. I'm not sure I agree with Mike on the green stuff, but I would definitely try to pull some detail out of the surf. :toast:

I'm sure this would be good for sales - the public wants shots that are recognizeable to them. The sea weed a nice colorful touch to the comp. The wave provides a nice separation in tones from fg to the ocean. One very minor comp point for me is the way the left distant hill is interrupted by the bridge just at the top of the hill. I might have moved a little closer or farther away so that they didn't directly line up into each other - similar to the hills on the right. I would have expected more banding in the sky from the use of the CP, but you handled this very well, maybe in post. I can see why it is so photographed and I like your take.
