Standing Guard

This male Anhinga is watchful as its mate sits on the nest. The mate can be seen shaded by the bird's left wing.
Was shooting in varied light conditions and forgot to reset the exposure, iso, etc. Oh well, the D3s can take it, I guess.

Nikon f/5.6 1/8000 ISO 3200

Anhingsa eyes are starting to color up and this effect shows up nicely here -- great details in the blacks and I like the tree top presentation

I've only seen a couple of anhinga's when visiting FL so I'm not wise to their habits. Is he shading her on the nest (looks that way,) or just sunning himself and happens to be close to her? Nice shot, love the larger version.

Craig, he's not likely doing it to provide shade. Just looks that way. Anhingas have to air dry after each dive because they don't have oil glands for waterproofing feathers. That or he's just showing off as a proud dad-to-be.

Really nice classic pose, sharp details & a great setting/BG Wayne.
I like the placement in the frame, good exposure of those blacks - no easy task.
Well done! :wavey:

Wow. Birds on eggs already. We're struggling towards 8 hours of daylight and temps above 0 degrees.

Good shot, showing the classic behavior. Nice colors, too.
