Flamenco Kinglet

From my last morning at Bosque del Apache. The Ruby Crowned Kinglets were starting to set up territories in the willows across the canal on the left side of the road between Willow Deck and Coyote Deck. They were far too absorbed in each other to care about the presence of photographers. After taking several shots at too long a distance for such a small bird from the car, I tried approaching closer and found that this guy had no problems with me coming almost to the edge of the canal across from him. The only problem is that they just don't hold still!

1DIV, 500mm f4 ISL + 1.4TC, hand held, f7.1, 1/2000, iso 400,manual exposure. Cropped to 5.9 MP (mostly from the sides). Normal processing in CS5. I cloned a couple of really offensive twigs but figured there was no way I could do anything about the generally cluttered bg. Taken January 22nd at 10:42 am.

Your comments and criticisms are always appreciated.

Thanks for looking,

I like the upturned wing Dennis. Nice job making this guy pop with the busy BG to contend with.

Another one of my favorites, at least of birds in the "small dynamo" category. I love this guy and super nice job with the crown feathers and wings. If any bird photographers want to hone their skills with auto focusing they should spend some time looking for these or their cousins the golden crowned. Great job Dennis, I like how it's cropped to remove most of the brush clutter they like to hang out in. :toast: :toast: :toast:

wow--handheld at 1/200? I don't think I'd be able to do that. wonderful pose, nice detail, the crown patch is a huge plus too. I like the comp and don't have any objection to the setting.

Oops. Brian said "handheld at 1/200?" Should have been 1/2000. Slip of the finger. I fixed it.

Amazing wing flare. Nice head turn and excellent detail. I would be elated to get such a shot of this fast moving species.

I like this a lot, Dennis - especially the unusual pose with that appealing head turn. Great look at the crown and I'm fine with the setting.

Adorable.... Considering that this is a hand held shot with such a heavy lens it is simply a great shot. :toast: Love the way the little fellow is looking at you and the wing posture.... Beautiful.
