Colorado Dreamin' (w/edit)

Ok, yeah, a dorky title, but it was a great sunrise up at Dream Lake in RMNP, Colorado last weekend. I flew out to Denver and met up with Brent Doerzman specifically to shoot the cool ice formations and maybe get in a sunrise. The sunrise worked out pretty well and then I met Morris McClung and Kane Engelbert who got there for sunrise much earlier than me....I am sure they got some pretty great comps. I had time to get basically one comp, as I was almost late to the show and the winds made it difficult to set up quickly.

Canon 5D2, Nikon 14-24. Two exposure blend.

Man that is some cool ice forms! Personally, I'd crop out the mountains and keep the square at the bottom. Very cool!

I had to work that day otherwise i could've joined the party. Nice sunrise, but better ice--the ice patterns really make the shot hear, im almost inclined to go with Floris' suggestion, cause with a crop the blue is bearable, but with the sky visible here it just makes it look like the ice is super-saturated, way too blue. I may be biased cause ive seen Kane's shots and he kept his snow white, which looked more natural to me. Love the comp though--great pattern and leading line crack! :wavey:
Incidentally, after playing with this screen a few minutes--i think a square crop 50/50 looks best to me, balance is good and more cohesive, eliminates a lot of the heavy blue at bottom.

That is quite superb Jimmy. Love the patterns and the opposing hues particularly that of the sky reflected in the blue ice. I agree with Floris the bottom half is stunning and is a photo in its own right but I would imagine commercially it is better to have the mountain view in the shot to maintain a sense of place.

I was definitely inclined to shoot just the ice. I don't have any shots of the peaks from my past couple of visits to Dream, so I decided that I would try for something a little different for my portfolio. I can always crop for sure.

Stan, I think you're correct on the oversaturated blues. I have a file that I prepared for print and I use Moab Slickrock Metallic paper and it just needs some extra boosties to make it work. This is definitely that file. Let me get one with a toned down blue foreground.

Wonderful mix of warm and cool color especially in the bottom half Jimmy. The ice portion would make a fabulous abstract on its own.

While I agree that a crop of just the ice would look nice, I think it's more of a "photographer's" shot than salable one. People like grand landscapes. I like it as is but think that the mountains and sky seem a bit underexposed. I think by selectively dodging some of the midtones back there it would help to ease the tension between FG and BG.

Beautiful Jimmy! I really like the 2/3-1/3 comp here and there's a subtle little crack leading the eye in to the frame.

I might agree about the blues a little on the ice/snow, but not too far off and plus you already explained it.

Beautiful mountain and winter landscape.

Gorgeous shot, Jimmy! Great color and light, and what a show it was! Great to see you, Brent, Kane, and Fred up there! And, I love the blues in the ice. Sure, it's more blue than it was, but mine are turning out similar if not more, and I'm liking them a lot! And, while the ice would make a nice shot as well, why would you leave out light and clouds on dramatic peaks like this????? :toast:

Here's an edit with less blue saturation and a lighter mountain and sky. Any better?

I loke both variatins a lot. The edit makes the whole image feel brighter and perhaps a bit less dramatic. The first version feels more like the very beginning of day.

Man, Jimmy, there's nothing like going out to shoot ice pictures in the winter. This is a really strong vertical. Here in the Northeast we have a renowned Adirondack photographer named Nathan Farb. If he were out in Colorado, this is the kind of composition he would have shot. That's the greatest compliment I can give your photo, really.

Very nice, Jimmy. I really like the foreground with the reflected warm light contrasting with the blue color in the ice as well as the patches of snow. I hope you got some abstract shots of just the ice . You also had some nice light on the peaks and in the low clouds as well. Very nice all the way around.

A great sunrise and polka dot foreground. The lightening of the sky is better. You, Morris and Kane have differig shots, but equally enjoyable to view. Way cool!

The ice is just killer! and makes the image. The evergreeens detract from the scene as a whole for me. If they are not coated in snow, I usually pass on including them in images because they often lack definition and depth copmpared to the rest of the image. So, just keep the ice if it were me. Some of the coolest ice and snow patterns I have seen.

Gorgeous Jimmy. Personally, I like the extra blue in the original, but I do like the lighter mountains and sky in the repost. Nothing like being difficult, huh? The reflected color inthe ice really draws me in - I love it. A beautiful image.
