Another Eagle Eye

This is the same eagle from my last post. I received some great comments that, hopefully, show up in this posting. I liked the open beak in this shot. As I was processing this image, I realized that this particular eagle was at the Dallas zoo, not the Fort Worth zoo. I like to go to the zoo to hone my photography skills. Shooting at a zoo presents some unique challenges. Shooting through wire or bars is sometimes necessary, as it was with this shot. Also, isolating the subject from all the man made objects can be challenging. That is why I sometimes choose tight shots, like this post and my previous post.

I used a Canon 100-400 mm lens for this shot, as this is my primary wildlife lens. This lens can be very good, but it has some limitations. This shot was at f5.6. My lens is much better when stopped down. I was pleased that this image was as sharp as it is. I used a monopod for this shot. I try to use a monopod or tri-pod with the 100-400, as I get much better images when I do. I would be curious to hear what other 100-400 users have to say about this lens.

Hope this wasn't too much information. Once again, comments and critiques are welcome.

I like this image much better. I always try to have my subject looking out of the image. Sorry, but I don't have the 100-400 lens.

Very nice Jerry. I like this comp better than the other one plus his slightly opened beak makes it very interesting. I understand what you mean about the aperture. f8 or so would of provided a little more of the bird in focus.

Nice eagle photo. You have the zoo element well. Good detail in both white and brown feathers. Sorry, don't have the 100-400, but with my Sigma 150-500 F-8 is the preferred aperature. Thanks for sharing.

nice, Jerry--love the open bill here--what a great look. I much prefer the comp on this one to the last. I share your thoughts on the 100-400--it can certainly deliver some excellent shots, but it helps to stop it down to f/8.
