George Hamilton a homeless man from North Carolina and his two dogs fill out paper work at a DC homeless shelter. He said he came up here because the services are better in D.C. This is the national trend right now and its why D.C.’s homeless population is rising.

I don't think I've seen anyone comment on this series of homeless folks you've posted. I think you've done well to show these people as people and not just something to avoid. It's not just DC. I live near Sacramento, CA and just last week "they" (whoever "they" are) did the annual count of homeless in our county and came up with over 2000 people. And I'm sure that's an undercount. Keeping the issue before us is a good thing. Thanks.

Thanks Peter a few have posted really nice comments here along with yours. Im going to wrap it up after this week because Ive got travel assignments for my paper coming up but this has been a nice way to slow my pace down and spend time shooting slow and waiting for the right moment. Im so used to blasting away with pro DSLR's that Id lost a little edge on comp and watching BG's. This project really fixed that plus I have something to offer editors that will be meaningful story telling. You guys saw it first :toast:

Poverty has been increasing dramatically the past four or five years, something you don't often hear about. In my town, the homeless shelter (Union Gospel Mission) is just three blocks from the local state unemployment office. While welfare benefits are low in my state, we are small enough population wise that many churches get involved and usually jobs and places to stay are found. I have not seen people sleeping in the streets here. That might partly be because religious orgainizations are very healthy and active here, and partly because it's often been below zero outside.

I think the choice of a small camera such as a Leica is a good fit for the subject and manner of getting the shots. Small cameras are much less obtrusive and intimidating, and I think that's a big help. The range of focal lengths typically used for these shots is not that great and well within the range of what's available for these cameras.
