Galapagos Flycatcher (also known as Large-Billed Flycatcher) with Beetle
Myiarchus magnirostris

One of my favorite shots from the Galapagos. This individual let me watch him catch several insects. In fact, he seemed to be happy to show off his hunting skills.

Santa Cruz Island, in the highlands
January 2012
Canon 7D
300mm f4L + 1.4 TC
f 5.6
1/320 s.
ISO 500
(used these settings because it was overcast and we were in a heavily treed area)

All C&C most appreciated.

Not very often does a bird allow you to get so close while looking for food. The flycatchers in my area are very hard to approach. Wonderful detail on the larger version.

Very nice tight portrait. Wonderful details. I'd crop a bit from the top.

Great detail and sharpness :jump: I like the pose of the flycatcher. The beetle helps to make this image unique. Thanks for sharing.

The open bill holding the intact beetle as well as the clear eye and fine feather detail make for a very nice portrait here. That combination would have a fairly close MFD as well. How far away were you?

Great color, detail and catch light in the eye. Maybe crop some off the top, but either way works for me!!

fantastic detail, Rebecka, and the prey is a great bonus. nice setting and comp, as far as taking some off the top, I think that would work but I do like it as is. Myiarchus flycatchers are one of my favorite groups--they have cool vocalizations and a ton of character--so it's really cool to see one I have not seen.
