Thoughts of spring

A month into winter now so I figured I'd post a spring image. Caught this red admiral in the backyard last April. I purposely cropped out the top of the wing because I wanted to accentuate the body and proboscis.

Very fine capture of this beautiful specimen, John. The strong light really brought out the amazing pattern in the BF's wings. Looks like a native american woven rug. Really superb detail. The bg is colorful but the detail in the bg does compete for attention, in my opinion. Because of the way the BF is aligned in a single plane of focus, you probably could shot this with less dof to try to blur the bg, but the preferred look of the bg is pretty subjective. Overall, a very fine image of this extraordinary BF.

The colors do seem to compete with each other...but there's probably nothing you can do about it...unless you know how to change the bg to black and white (I know with the newer versions of photoshop it's really hard to do, if at all). I love the detail in the wing...and it is in focus! Getting most of-if not all of-the butterfly can be tricky sometimes.

Very good sharpness where it counts, and I like how the purple flowers frame your b-fly John.
I have to admit I'm not crazy about the comp with the insects wing clipped, but the detail here carries the day
