Blk Footed Ferret pop-up

I am processing some images from last winter. One of my highlights was spending time photographing a black footed ferret, an animal that was declared extinct in 1979. A few years later a remnant colony was discovered and re-introductory efforts have successfully established small but sustaining populations in several western states. This is in Wind Cave National Park, SD. I was thrilled because the ferrets are primarily nocturnal and are seldom seen or photographed outside captive facilities or under artificial lighting situations. This one is wild, free ranging and apparently thriving. Check my gallery for a full body view.

D3S, 200-400 + 1.4 TC, 550 mm, iso 1400, 1/500, f9, +1.3 ev This is a fairly strong crop, with sharpness and contrast tweaks to maintain detail lost to the crop and from using the teleconverter. Your suggestions and comments are welcomed.

Anxiously awaiting your Coelacanth pictures as well! I like the contrast of the snow against the soil and the inquisitive look of the ferret and the eye level POV

Great capture in what appears to be challenging conditions. Composition and DOF are very good. I have not seen one in the wild and so do not know their coloring, but wonder if the suble markings can be brought out more. What a treat to see such a special animal.

James, the Coelacanth comparison made me laugh. Now THAT will be a hard one to fulfill on my "to do" list!

What a privilege for you to be able to photograph such and endangered animal and for us to be able to see your work. I like your image here with its natural colors, straight forward composition and detail. Hope their numbers increase to a sustainable number. Thanks for this photo. Chet

What a find. The snow really enhances the scene, IMO. Don't see how you could've done better, Lon.

An excellent image Lon; I like the head popping out of the ground and the matching colors in fur and surroundings. The centered placement work in this case and technically this looks perfect, even in the larger version, despite the large crop. The fact that this is an extinct creature only makes this even more special, you must have a time-machine.

That's an adorable little creature. A bit too much clutter for me personally, but I'd be happy to have this.

Great capture Lon - tough animal to find in the daylight, that's for sure. Well done!

Wow Lon, this is a fantastic opportunity in broad daylight too. Very cute portrait and the snow on the land adds that little extra. Image quality is still very good I think. :toast: :toast:

Excellent capture. I remember seeing one as a child but I can't remember if it was near where we lived in Kadoka or visiting up in the Black Hills. Thank you for sharing this.

Just seeing one would be amazing, capturing one a dream....excellent and I can imagine the feeling you must have had when he decided to show himself in daylight.

Having the camera at the right moment really does pay off. Don't know how many "shots" I missed b/c I wasn't ready...but how many I got b/c I was. (more of the later) Don't have any complaints...nature is nature, can't do much about it ("clutter" in background) but it doesn't bother me either.
How long did you have to wait for him to appear?

10+ on the cute scale, the centered comp's perfect for this too.
