Tried out my Sigma 50-500MM, 1:4-6.3 lens. Not as sharp as my Zuiko.
Handheld, Olympus E5, f/6.3, 1/250 sec, ISO 100, 390MM, spot metering.

I liked the shadowing. Used a little Lightroom, slightly noisy. Comments and criticisms are appreciated.

I like the feeling here of dappled light. Some might prefer that there was not a shadow on the butterfly but I think it has a nice feeling to it. I think the comp would perhaps be even stronger if some off of the top & right side was cropped.

Like Eirini, I rather like the shadow on the butterfly, Elizabeth - and the overall tones of the image are very appealing. I like your choice of dof too. Just wonder about cloning out the smaller twigs below the insect to give it full emphasis, but that's a very minor point.

Elizabeth:
My first reaction was I wish the BF was partly in shadow but the longer I looked, it seem okay. Wish the BF eyes were sharper but HH at 390mm is not easy.

I turned and took the photo. I wished it had been sharper, too. I did like it. Thank you for your coments.

Very nice for a quick grab shot, Elizabeth. I like the light on the BF, the BF's position in the frame, and the colors. I bet you will have lots of fun with that 50-500.

I have heard that the "Bigma" did its best work above f/8. I don't have any direct experience, but it certainly would bear investigation. The picture is definitely soft. I do like the colors and comp. Bougainvillea can be tough to photograph. I agree with Eirini on the crop.

Elizabeth: A fine party crasher and a nice image. I second the opinion regarding cloning away some of the twigs in the BG. This interests me in that we have bougainvillea and lots of fritillaries in our garden but I have never seen one nectaring on this flower. Nice catch. >=))>
