Spotlight on Birch

by Carolyn Derstine

Gallery: FloraPosted January 9, 201391 views10 comments
I came across this fall scene while hiking in a forest in the Adirondacks of NY. The sunlight was shining through the trees and spotlighting the colorful fall leaves that were still growing from this Birch tree that had fallen to the forest floor.

Canon Rebel T1i. 219mm at F/13 for 1/25 sec. ISO 400. Natural lighting.

I really like these brilliant leafy scenes you find! This really gives a sense of the rays of light piercing into the forest!

I sure like the back lit leaves, but find the bright areas of the bark too bright and distracting.

I agree with Mark about the bright areas. Trying to bring them down may or may not work. If it doesn't, I recommend leaving it alone.

The overall scene is excellent, well seen and captured Carolyn. The bright spots ..yes is a bit distracting...

I like this scene, but its a tough one to shoot with that contrast. Underexpose will give you more room to play next time post. Once highlights are blown, there's no bringing them back.

Hi Carolyn :wavey: Reminds me of a Gauguin painting :jump: love the vibrant colors  Would crop the overexposed birch to the last red leaf.

Carolyn:
Love the leaves :jump: vibrant and alive. Would burn down the bright trunk or crop most of it way.

Carolyn: Great find and a special moment with the light. I agree with the rest regarding the bright BG spots. An exposure blend might be the best remedy but I do like the overall comp and subject. >=))>

Excellent use of the spotlighting. Ditto on reigning in the brightest parts.
