Rocks & Moss

by Bill Chambers

Gallery: LandscapePosted January 8, 2013208 views10 comments
A variation of my recent rockscapes. During this during the Thanksgiving holiday in NE Alabama. As you already know, I'm a sucker for rocks and moss so it only fits that I'd capture at least one image that includes both.

LARGE version available for better detail.

D2x w/ 35-70 @ 70mm
1/200 @ f/11 - MLU and remote release
100 ISO
No filter (left my polarizer at the motel )
Tripod
Capture One 6, CS4

Thank you for your thoughts and critiques, and thanks for looking.

I certainly like the composition, and am always a fan of square crops. However, the image, for want of a better description, seems dull and lifeless. "Flat" if you will. Perhaps an increase in saturation, contrast, structure, clarity, etc would help. In doing so, I would be somewhat careful of the bright lichen though.

Bill a very eye pleasing juxtaposition. It all fits together very nicely, with the minor exception of the small clump of moss in the URC. For some reason, it is a bit distracting. Still, I don't see how you could have done it differently. The crop you have is the only one that works. I can live with the distraction.

I would not call this dull or lifeless. Maybe just a warming up might give it more pep. The colors do seem slightly cool.

Well seen. I like the colors and and textures in this one. Like the square crop. Actually I think the curves give this image some life...works for me!

Beautiful color and detail Bill, looks perfect on my screen, and I especially like the mood, it reminds me of warm September mornings in the Adirondacks, I've seen this scene many times, and never been able to capture it, I like this very much, along with the memories it brings back. Beautifully seen and presented.

The naturalness and straight forward presentation of this small slice of nature make it more than the sum of its parts.

I appreciate your composition, Bill, with the kind of flow at the right, the kind of steadyness made by the rocks at the left and the mosses in between.

A cool variation in textures in close proximation. The contrasts in those make the shot for me. I also like those nice greens against the browns. Whereas the leaf in the ulc and the moss in the urc do repeat the colors elsewhere, I do like a crop off of the top as it allows the eye to move back and forth across the image more freely. Very well done!

This is an interesting intimate scene. I love the natural looking presentation and all the details in it. There's a lot to explore. The square format works well for me here.
