Bear Creek

I made this picture along Bear Creek just before it flows in to the Wisconsin River which is not far from my home. It was made in the late afternoon as the sun was getting low on the horizon. I enjoyed the backlit light, the golden glow in the grasses and shadows in the snow. What looks like it could be a small path is just a deer trail with a coating of fresh snow. Another of my favorite places that are close to home. Thanks for looking. Larger version included!
Canon, 24-105 @24, iso 100, f/16 and 1/20 sec.

Beautiful light and color and you keep putting me in the scene with your work. I need my jacket now!

Wonderful low angle winter light Nick. The back lit grasses add some warmth to this beautiful scene.

Love the light and shadow. The warm colored grass looks great next to the cold, blue shadows. Wonderful mood in this image.

Very nice, Nick!

I too like all the things you describe here. What really strikes me is the soft afternoon light of winter. Makes for a very balanced exposure with beautiful details throughout.

A well executed image with beautiful light, color and detail. The comp has a nice balance and is a great representation of the scene, but it doesn't hold me for long.

To me the mark of a successful winterscape is capturing the essence of the scene. Viewing your large version, I can feel the chill of the quickly setting sun. Well done. Now it's back home to a nice warm fire. :toast:

Really enjoy your composition, Nick, with a very natural feel to it, that places the viewer right there. Very much like the backlit grasses with the warm tones contrasting with the blues. You certainly make these winter images very well.

Lots going on here, but the warm/cool contrast and the repeating trunks bring some order. I like how the foreground trunks sort of provide a path into the rest of the scene.

Nice image, I do like how you feel like you can walk into the scene. I think this would make a nice black and white.

A complex but ultimately satisfying scene that draws me in to study the lines, shapes and interplay of light.

Pretty cool scene Nick - beautiful in it's simplicity and familiarity. You've captured the late afternoon light very nicely here.

Nick, I really enjoy the fresh and natural colors in your image. The three-dimensional character draws me into the scene. You make me feel like breathing the wintry cold air.

I agree with others comments Nick, this shot definitely puts you there. The low winter light is very nice.

As you know--this is a tricky subject in tricky lighting. The light is real nice, and your processing is superb, which is why it's getting lots of nice comment--it's a nice shot and it deserves some nice comments. However...you have hundreds of nice shots and the real question is whether this rises like cream to the top. It doesn't, because the tree is too heavy and the light too intentionally blocked there, if that makes any sense (well it does to me... ) Sunstars can be cliche and tricky too, but i think this is a scene that would have worked better with the sun emerging rather than blocked, to invite rather than to hinder. My 3 pennies... :wavey:

I am borderline on the composition of this one Nick...but...photography is about light and I really think you saw some nice light and captured a nice scene.

Thanks to all of you for your thoughts on this one! As always they are much appreciated.
Stan, I like the idea of a sunstar here...wish I would have tried that...Funny, but while I was processing this I had that same thought and wondered why I didn't think of trying it while shooting the picture...oh well..I'll do it next time if I can...
