Chickadee Oil Effect

I used the oil filter in PS CS6 to create this from a photo along with other enhancements including dodge and burn, USM, etc. I am interested in hearing opinions as to whether this is considered an artistic treatment or is this considered "gimicky"?

This is a wonderful comp and application of the 'oil' filter.. Along with your other enhancements, a very attractive image Paul.
I especially like the birds pose and head position, this common bird has never looked so good

Nice, Paul. The white/green leaf to the right of the bird draws the eye away from the bird, so it may need to be toned down.

The oilpaint filter has a definite look, which can be used to create beautiful works. I think how it is used, like so many filters, determines whether it is a gimick or not. I think it works well here, and isn't so "gimicky".

Strong comp and nice use of the filter Paul. My only suggestion would be to clone out some of the busyness around the limb so that the bird is more isolated and vignetted by the simple bg.

I like your treatment a lot. It's very "artistic" and makes good use of the limited color palette. As a minor nit, I'm bothered by the line just above the chickadee's head.

Thank you all for the comments and I´m so pleased for this to be chosen as this week's WP. Guess I'll try to do some more these oil filter treatments. Thanks, again!
