Dawn of the Apocalypse

here's my first upload of 2013 (btw, happy new year to all of you fellow NPNers!). the reason i'm posting this image is that i've been thinking about my upcoming travels a lot during the past days. patagonia and the area shown in the image in particular are high in the ranking of possible destinations. we'll see what 2013 will bring..

there's not much to be said about the image itself. lenticular clouds lit from below in the background. rust, washed out of a steep slope in the foreground. 210 seconds of exposure at f/8 (no NDs, but way before sunrise).

you can read more about the image on my blog. this time i've also included a few snapshots of the area, to give you an idea what it's like.

make sure to check out the larger version!

Canon 5DMKII, EF 17-40 @ 19mm, GND
ISO 100, f/8, 210 seconds
single exposure processed in LR4.

best,
joerg

Just wow! I am in awe of this photo. The composition is just perfect for me. I love the little lake peeking out from over that ridge. Of course, the sky is so surreal yet works extremely well in picking up the reddish color LLC and moving my eye across the image. Just beautiful.

Wonderful cloud formations. Their smooth formations make a nice contrast to the rocky FG. For such a barren place, lots of colorful rock. Maybe I'll run into you in Pataonia this year. :toast:

I love the juxtaposition of the washes of color and the speck of blue lake. There's such a swirling starkness. I do feel like the foreground wash of orange is too bright, but that's a minor nit on an amazing image.

Epic is all I can say Joerg! The dynamic comp, killer light, and especially the color in that "sierra wave" type cloud is just excellent. Congrats! :toast: :toast: :toast:

Everything works great here, Jörg. It's always exciting to see what comes out of these ultra-long exposures.

Light, tones, texture, formations--this has it all, Joerg! Of course, the large version is stunning.
I'm sure that you'll make a print out of this.

An interesting and disorienting photo. It appears as though light is hitting the FG but its not and the sun is illuminating the clouds but from a different direction. Interesting.

Very nice capture Joerg. That's one crazy sky and you captures it so well. I also like the rust coloration in the FG. I realize it's before sunrise but I might be tempted to boost contrast just a bit.

Joerg,

OH MY Goodness! this is killer! I think you did a wonderful job incorporating ALL the elements here in to a cohesive composition. I wasn't there so it's hard to speak to the saturation level of the rusted rock, but man, the colors represented throughout are sure vibrant.

Having said that, I just have to ask if you captured any images with more sky? Those lenticulars are spectacular and to me, could have been an image just of themselves. The sky is so killer I just naturally want to know why it's not more prominent. I guess the colorful geology is a good reason... still, just curious. Regardless though, awesome image.

Spectactular. The drama you captured in the fg and in the sky really make this one magical, fantastical!

I like everything except the clouds. If this is a composite, or a time photo I can understand but they look over-processed.
Just my 2-cents.

Love it. That orange in the foreground sends my eye straight to the pink in the upper right corner. This makes for a very nice composition.

Spectacular. My first impression was of an ancient time when volcanoes and ice ruled the earth, as the rusty 'flow' gives the sense of lava. Awesome.

This is an absolutely stunning shot. You've handled the range of tones here wonderfully, and I love how the foreground rust mimics the clouds. This has a very Lord of the Rings feel to it.
