Texas Brown Tarantula

This is an Extended Depth of Field image of the Texas Brown Tarantula (Aphonopelma hentzi). My technique involved blending 12 shots taken at various planes of focus along the animal. In Photoshop, I then combined the layers and erased areas out of focus to reveal layers beneath where the areas were in focus. I did this through as much of the Tarantula as possible. My goal was to reveal as much in focus as possible, thus extending what would have been a very shallow depth of field. The effort took many hours over several days.

The Tarantula was shot as it sat on a large boulder in a stream in the Lost Maples State Natural Area, near Vanderpool, Texas.

Original shots taken with a Canon 1D MkIII, Canon 100mm macro lens, ISO 200, 1/6 sec., f/11. A Canon EX580 flash was used with an OmniBounce to provide fill light. Tripod mounted.

There are more than a few people I know that would prefer not to see this tarantula in such great detail.

I won't be showing this shot to my wife, for one. I admire your patience! Thanks for posting this.

Tom, yeah my wife was freaking out the whole time I was shooting it. In fact, I came within just a few millimeters to remove a small plant blocking my view. I was so excited to find it, though, because I had been trying to find one of these for three years. Fact is, this creature was so docile and calm the whole time, I felt very comfortable with it. I was one with my subject. Oh, and I absolutely hate spiders!!

Expertly captured image of this tarantula, Paul. Excellent detail from the stack. You were fortunate to have such a cooperative subject but kudos to you for having the patience and nerve to take the shots needed for the stack. :toast:

Stunning shot with great details. I admire your patience, endurance and courage (with the tarantula), but the result is well worth it.

Paul, a fantastic picture of a gorgeous creature. Your patience in processing paid off and the details are great. I lived in Texas for years and never have the luck of seeing one of these in the wild. Thank you for sharing! :toast:
