The Cupboard was Bare

Another image at the local nature preserve on the day before Christmas. It was a dark and foggy morning. This doe was reaching up for a little morsel on the tree but as is plain to see there is nothing there. They've browsed all the leaves as high as they can reach. Nevertheless, it's common to see the deer try and get just a little nibble of something. I lightened this a half stop just for a little more light but it really was this foggy with little or no color or contrasts. I thought maybe making this a vertical comp but decided I like this with a half and half image along a ULC to LRC diagonal. Does this work for you? Comments and critiques are very welcomed and appreciated.

Peter, like this for the mood it evokes and for the natural framing provided by the tree branches. Happy New Year!

I like this and your narrative and title as is. However, if you have any interest in experimenting with it, maybe consider taking some off the left edge to make it a 4:5 aspect ratio with the deer right on the left rule-of-thirds vertical. The other thing I thought of was maybe a monochrome rendition - B&W or sepia - because to me the essence of this is all of the forms; the deer, the branches above, and the angular dead branch coming in from the right edge. Not sure if the slight tinge of color may be slightly distracting from the underlying formal aspects.

One of the better deer in the fog photos I have seen! I would still like to see a vertical crop to see if it would give the deer more impact. Thanks for sharing and Happy New Year.
