After all the toys were put together, just enjoying some wine watching the sun start to dip into the ocean under the colorless sky I mention to my guests often in nature this is when the color begins and everyones usually packing their cameras and leaving. Wouldnt you know it the color started to build for the next 10-15 minutes into this intense colors. I grabbed my camera and just started to frame up some silhouettes (I come from film and I'm ok with and actually prefer true blacks often) from my patio. This is a little different for me as it's just a jpeg (I always have my camera to raw +jpeg)out of the camera, simple clean comp to show off the sky. This was the third night of great skys here in Carlsbad and I just couldn't get to a decent location. I think this might have a place in my portfolio, let me know what you think.

When I saw the sunset this evening, I hoped someone in SD would make good use of it. This turned out fantastic, and I'm glad you left it as a silhouette. It seems there is so much emphasis these days on having complete detail in the shadows --- but that often makes for muddy images that lack drama. The wonderful sunset gave you all the drama you needed on this shot. Well done.

I , too, like the true black silouette....and this one is gorgeous against the intense sunset. I never thought about my preference for black shadows as coming from a life with film.....but, that makes sense. I really have never cared about the details in the shadows. I like the contrast against the great details of color in sunsets this fiery.. Merry Christmas!

Todd,

Intense and gorgeous color! Your portfolio? You bet! A great silhouette with the Palm tree, although in an ideal world, I'd love to see more sky!

Simple, beautiful.

Wonderful silhouette and colors Todd. It does harken back to the days of film when blacks were black. Very nice.
