This Blue-winged Teal was a cooperative subject while it swam under the bridge at Bolsa Chica Ecological Preserve in Huntington Beach, CA yesterday.

Nikon D800 Nikkor 200-400mm lens 1.7TC 650mm f/8 1/1250 ISO 640 white balance auto RAW Tripod with Wimberley Gimbal minimal crop and processing in CS6 & NIK

Bolsa Chica is a wonderful birding area. A nicely sharp shot, and the color palette is nice. A lower angle would give the shot more punch, but that's not always possible at Boca. The whites in the facial crescent and chest look a bit hot on my monitor; detail is lost in the facial crescent. If you are shooting in RAW, you may be able to recover some of the detail in post-processing.

Very good details considering you were using 1.7TC. I'd like to see a little brighter tail half of the bird. Overall a fine image Patrick ! Enjoy going out shooting with you.

I'll second Jim's comments. This is a hit-or-miss species around Phoenix and I've yet to get a shot I like of one.

nice colors, water and comp, with a sharp looking teal, Patrick. I think Jim has done a nice job in terms of critique.

He looks like he is eye-ing you with skepticism! I think the blown white area would be easy to recover...I like the lighting over all & the choppy feel of the water. I don't mind the shaded areas...the splendid breast feathers are the highlight anyhow in my opinion!
