Last Snow WC B/W564

I made this image early in the morning along the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway just a couple of miles from my home. The original was pretty much b/w but not quite, so I did a b/w conversion and liked it even better. This was from one of our last snows in March. Just the other morning now we had our first snow this winter and this place looked almost like this once again.
5D2, iso 100, 24-105 @47mm, f/16 and 1/25 sec.

Great capture of a beautiful scene. The snow coating on all the branches with the dark trunks is stunning. The reflection adds another level. Nice handling of the converstion to b&w. Excellent!

Fantastic B&W image, Nick! I like the way you centered the tree grouping and the included reflection with the edges/corners fading to white. Frames this wonderful scene so well. Love the artistry in those dark tree trunks showcased against the snow-covered leaves, mountains, and the white sky. . .and in the echoing reflection. Great focus and fine processing, Nick!

I really like this composition. First of all, I like your frame because it echos the limbs of the trees and the B&W motif. The shore line is a little tilted downwars towards the right and to my vision, that adds a bit of dissonance that I don't think is necessarily helpful to the point, which should be more quiescent. So I would suggest a perspective crop a degree or two counter clockwise which the horizon will certainly support. Maybe a nit pick but I'm sure you want to hear suggestions.

Now, the thing I love the most about this image: your choice of shutter speed was sufficient to maintain the waviness of the water in the foreground instead of totally smoothing it out. This is great, I think, in that the ripples in the water mimic the texture at the tops of the trees that is being reflected. That was the feature I liked the most about this.

Thanks much for your thoughts on this! I'm glad you like it.
John, Yes, I see that a bit of ccw rotation would work. I also shot one longer exposure and agree with you that this one worked much nicer with the ripples. That was a big part of the scene for me.

A perfectly lovely and serene B/W. The reverse vignette really adds to this. There is a slight CW tilt, about 0.5 degrees by the shore line. Easily corrected. Other than that very minor flaw, a superb presentation. :toast:

Thanks Phil, I appreciate your thoughts! I should have rotated this a bit before posting, but I just didn't notice it. Here is a version rotated just as you and John mentioned. It is also right at 0.5... Nick

This is really neat, Nick. I like the placement of the trees and their reflections. I'm not sure what you did in the conversion, but this feels a lot like infrared film. You've got a nice overall glow and good focus on the trees and their reflections.

Gorgeous shot Nick, I absolutely love it. Simple, elegant, and incredibly effective. Makes me yearn for the cold, clear air of winter.
