Cottonwoods

Place: Boyce Thompson Arboretum, Superior, AZ
Date: July 20, 2012, 7:01 am
Equipment: Nikon D300, 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 VR AF-S @ 195mm, tripod
Exposure: ISO 400, perture preferred matrix meter, 1/125th @ f/11
Raw, PS CS3 on Mac

The cottonwood trees in the main canyon at Boyce Thompson Arboretum catch the morning light that sets off the light green leaves as if on fire. Once in a while I’ll bring along one or two shorter lenses like this just for ther trees.

Honest critiques requested; all comments appreciated.

This really has to be viewed in the larger version to fully appreciate all the details in both the highlights and the shadows. The shadows seemed a little muddy in the small rendition, but the large one is quite sharp. The little touch of highlight on the foreground rock provides a nice bit of dimensionality.

The lighting in this image gives the tree and the BG a nice 3-D look. I like how the left treeline somewhat follows the crack in the background rock. Nice comp in this with the tree placement in relation to background and foreground rocks. The tall foreground rock is a little odd but does add interest. If this were mine I would probably clone out the straight bare trunk in the upper right corner. Fine B&W image, Richard.

The tree really stands out wonderfully and there's just enough foreground rock and background softness to add the third dimension. The leaves really glow in the larger version.
