Leaves in the Stream

This was taken in Virginia at Harper's Ferry. I scanned it into my computer from a photo, I took many moons ago....before digital.

I think it scanned pretty true. How do you like it?

I like the concept. I have looked at the image for a while in both the small and large version and for me it doesn't work very well. I think the strong reflection at the bottom is what I am struggling with. Maybe if you had a polarizer to cut the reflection so the leaves would have stood out more.

The scan looks okay but the image seems to need a focal point or clear subject IMO. My eye just wanders randomly around the frame looking for a place to land. The pattern of flowing leaves could make a subject but would need some work.

The colored leaves in the middle are wonderfully intriguing but the glare on the lower part is distracting. Maybe you could try a crop that puts the emphasis squarely on the color and flow in the middle. That part of the image is great

Lucy,

Looks like you did a good job with the scan. Certainly a scene that would capture one's eye. I think the reflected highlights are a bit distracting and take away from the what you're seeing in the leaves, and I'm not sure a polarizer would have been the answer; I mean, yes, the reflected highlights could have been reduced, but then we all know that also changes the transparency of the water and if anything would have created a different scene. So in the end I think this reflects (not intended pun) how the scene was to the eye.

the only suggestion I have is to work on the color. This appears magenta and also blue in some spots. I think maybe burning down some of the highlights near the bottom, playing with the colors and I think you could improve this.

I like the combo of leaves and reflections. I think dodging the bright water in the foreground, might provide better overall balance and make it easier to spend more time looking at the leaves in the center and the reflections above them. Nicely seen.

Totally see where you were going with this one Lucy and love the vision! "One more" suggestion would be to try a panoramic crop removing the ripples on the top and only removing a tad from the bottom? :toast:
