Late Fall

...and winter is around the corner. This is the upper view of Latourell Falls on the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge. An easy to get to and iconic view, perfect for testing out a new camera.

For awhile now, I've been wanting to pick up a lightweight camera for bicycle touring and backpacking. I finally settled on the Sony RX100. I've been using it with a Giottos RT 8000 tripod and MH 1004 Mini-Ball Head (using the hack described by Dondo). The combined weight of the camera and tripod is around 600 grams (1.25 pounds). I'm impressed with the quality so far. It is similar to the D80 I've been shooting with, but produces an image twice as large (and fits in the pocket of my jeans  ).

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 at 10.4mm
0.6, 1/4, and 1/13 sec at f/11 and ISO 80

Beautiful scenic, John! I like the colors and tree lines and textures. This is very well
composed with trees diagonally presented on the left. It looks like you used the right
shutter speed on the waterfalls. Thanks for sharing.

This is an amazing falls. I like your comp a lot and enjoy the overall scene. The colors here just look a little to electric for me and take away some of the natural feel. Just my feeling looking at this John...I have never been there and don't really know what this place can look like. A beautiful scene no matter..

John,

This is so very dreamy! It would seem that composing a waterfall like this would be difficult in a horizontal frame, but this works beautifully despite the falls nearly breaching both top and bottom of the frame. The trees, moss and lichen serve the composition very nicely. Excellent job with this.

Thanks for the feedback! Here's a less saturated version to compare.

Nice. It's a pretty place even with the leaves off the trees. I like the size of that camera. Definitely a size to have fun with.

the second version is much more appealing, IMO. The colors are still vibrant but not so much they detract from the falls. Love the bright lichen on the rocks. Nice job

Beautiful late fall image John. I personally prefer the more saturated version. It sounds like you have found the ultimate ultralight setup in the RX100. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what you can create with the new camera!

That composition really works for me. Love the lines and balance of the bare trees, and the texture and color of the lichens, mosses, rock and water. Very appealing image. I prefer the less saturated version.

Repost is great, well, as was the original. Incredible comp among the 'chaos' of branches, leaves, etc. Can't believe the size of the camera! Good quality, nonetheless...

You just prove it is the artist and not the tool, John. Wonderful glow of color and light and your usual outstanding comp with everything you want and none of that you don't want. :toast:

Nice, I don't mind the saturated colors in the orginal, just a different type of a "dream" :). Framing is nicely organized here .

Very nice indeed John, and I like the re post with the little less saturation, beautifully seen and presented.
