Gallery: Macro & Close-upPosted December 1, 201286 views2 comments
This was an early experiment with macro photography, in the Spring of 2011 before I knew what focus stacking was. Tamron 90 mm macro with a 2X teleconverter, hand held, iso 800, 1/80 s, probably f/32.

I was lying down on my stomach looking at these bugs in mid morning under a maple tree beside my house. That must have been the beginning of when the neighbors thougut I was going insane. It's taken a bit longer for others to realize that.

The title references what I believe to be true; that these beetles eat aphids. I could be wrong.

So I'm thinking, photojournalism, landscape, wildlife... I picked close up and macro; a crapshoot at best.

Hi John. Certainly appropriate for this gallery. Nice job getting excellent magnification and detail. My only real nit is the strong light and the resulting reflection on the right side of the beetle. You might have also tried shooting this from the opposite angle, showing more of the head vs the rear, but this view does show this pattern and design very well.

Hi Scott,

I agree. Back in 2007 I wasn't as aware as I am now of stuff like specular reflectance and areas of blown out highlights in an image. That's what bugs me about seeing my work from back then, pun suggested.

Your suggestion as to looking at alternate points of view is excellent and one I will definitely try to recall in any context I shoot in the future. I very often do not stop to ask myself questions like this, and I will try to remember to do si going forward.

Thank you for your comment and suggestion!
