Autumn on the North Slope of Alaska one evening several years ago. Hope the hugeness of this tundra landscape comes across a little. When I lived in Alaska, I was able to make several trips to this area north of the Brooks Range to photograph the autumn color that usually peaks the last week of August. It's usually pretty cold, and you can experience snowfall in August, but no mosquitos. Would appreciate your comments and suggestions on this image.
4x5, 75mm, no filters, Velvia. M1 scan, Tony Kuyper's masks and other stuff.

Large image attached.

Thanks

Vance,

This is something different from you! Not your usual deep green intimate work. It is fabulous. The light you have here is so rich and it bathes everything wonderfully. I've never been to Alaska, but this really makes me what to go.

There is really something about your Alaska images that strike a cord in my soul Vance. This one has spectacular color, my favorites of yellows, oranges, and reds. The grey rocks anchor the scene especially with the diagonals. Maybe 'cause I visited there several times when I was much much younger. Maybe 'cause my youngest son is keen on getting there (he is a 3rd year forestry major at UNH).... but I too want to get back there for a visit). I particularly love the spectacular color of Velvia you captured. Thank you.

You've captured the vastness quite well. The distance, intense color and sweet light make for an eye-catching image. I like the glow on the rocks especially. Nice work

Wow - I really really love this Vance. I'm sure the 3d effect/perception would be much better in print as I imagine the detail would go out to the horizon. Color very nice as well. Great job!

Wow, this is a bit different Vance...in a good way! The sense of vastness does come across, especially in the larger image. Those reds are stunning as well! They really pop without looking overdone. Add to that the soft, low light the scene is bathed in and you have a winner in my book! :toast:

A beautiful grand scenic, Vance! The larger version is awesome. I believe that this would
make a wonderful large print. I have no suggestions for changes. It's well composed,
appealing to me from FG to BG. I like the colors and the rock formations. Some of the
subtle lines have been diagonally composed, giving me a slight feeling of movement, and
that's a real plus. Of course, the lighting that you captured is incredible. I should think that
this would be one of your favorites in your portfolio.

You did a wonderful job of capturing the expansiveness of the slope as well as the colors that few ever see and fewer appreciate.

vance, i like this - the space and sense of scale. i'm not overly convinced by the saturated reds - maybe if slightly muted this would take this over the top for me.

I have seen many images from Alaska and this tundra landscape and I am totally enthralled by this type of image. I would love to go there one day. So, I have a huge soft spot for your image.

Beautiful shot. As mentioned the reds might be slightly over-the-top but I'm OK with it too. What bothers me is the amount of purple on the horizon.

The vastness of the land does show for sure. But the incredible color and texture make it rock. This is an image to remember, Vance. The sunburst is also a nice touch.

Gorgeous image Vance, I like it as is, but also like it with about a 25% crop off the top so the eye stays on the rocks and foliage, there is such great texture, pattern and light there.

Vance,

This is wonderful! The "hugeness" of the tundra most certainly comes across here. You've captured that beautifully. I think the setting/rising sun really adds to the overall presentation. A grand Alaska image

Only two small nits/suggestions. Like Kah Kit, I'm seeing purple along the horizon; mostly the land just below the skyline. I don't mind the colors in the sky, just the land part. also, you mentioned no filters, which means you didn't use a center filter? I think the lens is providing a little natural vignetting, which I'm torn whether or not I would want to do some burning/dodging. But then again, the light fall off kinda goes along with the low angled light of the sun. Anyway, both minor.

Great to see an image from you. Always love you work Vance.

Wow! Intense and amazing, Vance. The contrast with the boulders and lichen (is it?) makes for in incredible scene.
