Rainy day distraction. Waiting for the snow leavel to drop. I thought I might try shooting some off camera flash.

David: I'm not a big fan of flashed flora but you did an exceptional job on this. 2 thumbs up! >=))>

Lovely. I like the center placement, square aspect ratio and framing. But the light placements are very nice in bringing out a broad dynamic range across the flower. I'm guessing maybe the main light from above and to the right with a fill light on the left side at maybe 90°. I can spend a long time looking at the areas of light and shadow in this.
Another thing I liked about it immediately was the small leaves at the bottom of the flower -- not sure what their proper name would be -- that are sort of like the fingers of a little green hand proudly holding the flower; at least that is the feeling I get from it.
The more I look at it, the more I see in it, and it makes me want to maybe try some studio stuff too now that the weather is trending toward Winter. Thanks for posting it. PS -- just got the connection; yellow rose of Texas

Thank you Bill and John. Bill I understand where you are coming from, I do not shoot many flash lit floral subjects and it seems that about half the viewers like them the other half not so much. John I used two Canon flashes. Your guess is right on about the placement of the flash, I also did have a white reflector (AKA white dinner plate) in front and down low as I was having trouble with the lower front not geting enough light. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

David:
I enjoy looking at this image and working out the flash position from shadows. I came to the same conclusion as John (without reading his comment first); however I did not guess the dinner plate. Very well done overall
